Moving house can become complicated quickly because several jobs need to happen at the same time: packing, removals, cleaning, utilities, post, broadband, address changes and the handover itself. A simple timeline makes the process much easier to manage.

This UK moving house checklist is designed to help you organise the move in practical stages. If you need help with removals, cleaning, storage or furniture clearance, you can also use our Moving Home Services request or open the MyFastOffer4U Move Planner.
Quick answer: what should you organise when moving house?
Most moves can be broken into five jobs: confirm the moving date, book the services you need, update important organisations with your new address, prepare both properties for moving day, and complete final checks such as meter readings and keys. Start earlier for jobs that depend on availability, especially removals, storage and broadband installation.

6–8 weeks before moving
Confirm the likely moving date
Before booking non-refundable services, make sure you understand how firm your moving or completion date is. If you are buying and selling in a chain, dates can still change until the legal process is sufficiently advanced.
Start comparing removal options
Think about whether you need a full removal company, a smaller moving service, packing help, temporary storage, or only transport for larger items. The British Association of Removers says its members are assessed against membership criteria and follow a consumer code of practice; its guidance also highlights the importance of clear written quotations and understanding what the service includes.
If you are still deciding what type of help you need, use our postcode-based moving-service request. We currently focus on four practical categories: removals, cleaning, storage and furniture clearance.
Check broadband at the new address
Ofcom recommends checking what broadband and mobile coverage are available at the new property and arranging any switch or installation early enough for your move. If you change broadband provider, the One Touch Switch process can simplify switching in many cases, although moving home can still require new equipment, an engineer visit or separate arrangements depending on the provider and network.
About one month before moving
Set up mail redirection
Royal Mail says a redirection needs at least five working days to arrange and recommends applying around three weeks before moving where possible. This can reduce the risk of important post continuing to arrive at your old address.
Plan utilities and council tax
Contact your energy, water and other relevant service providers about the move and check what they need from you. Royal Mail’s moving checklist also recommends arranging final utility bills and registering for council tax at the new address.
Decide what you will move, store, sell, donate or clear
Moving unnecessary items costs time and often increases the amount of work required. Sort larger items early. Furniture that will not fit the new home can be sold, donated, stored or removed through a suitable clearance service.
If the dates between leaving one property and entering the next do not line up, temporary storage can also be useful. Our Moving Home Services page lets you indicate storage alongside removals or other help.
1–2 weeks before moving
Pack the items you do not use every day
Label boxes by room and, where useful, add a short description of the contents. Keep important documents, essential medication, chargers, keys and valuables separate from boxes that will go into the removal vehicle.
Check access at both properties
Consider stairs, lifts, parking, narrow entrances and large furniture. Tell the removal provider about anything that could affect the job before moving day so the quote and plan reflect the real work required.
Update important addresses
Some organisations need to be told separately. GOV.UK states that drivers moving home must update relevant DVLA records, including the driving licence and vehicle log book where applicable. If you are registered to vote, GOV.UK also says you should register again with your new address details.
In England, the NHS advises telling your GP surgery if your address changes. If your new home is outside the practice catchment area, you may need to register with a new GP surgery.
Prepare for cleaning
Decide whether you will clean the old property yourself or use a cleaning service. Buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants can have different responsibilities, so focus on what applies to your own agreement and circumstances rather than assuming the same rules apply to every move.
The day before moving
- Charge your phone and keep chargers accessible.
- Keep keys, identification and important documents together.
- Confirm the arrival time with the removal provider.
- Prepare an essentials bag for the first night.
- Check that anything being left behind matches what has been agreed.
- Keep cleaning supplies accessible until the property is empty.
On moving day
Take final meter readings
Royal Mail’s checklist recommends taking final gas and electricity meter readings before leaving and recording readings at the new property when you arrive. Keep a photo or written record in case you need it later.
Complete a final walk-through
Check cupboards, loft areas, garages, sheds, storage spaces and outside areas. Make sure windows and doors are secure and that you have not left keys, documents or important possessions behind.
Keep the handover simple
Know how keys are being transferred and who you need to contact if there is a delay. If you are completing a purchase and sale on the same day, keep your solicitor or conveyancer’s details easy to reach.
After you arrive at the new home
Check the property before unpacking everything
Confirm that essential utilities are working, inspect the property for anything unexpected, and take any relevant meter readings or photographs before boxes cover the rooms.
Get broadband and essential services running
If broadband has not already been activated, follow the instructions from your provider. Ofcom advises checking availability at the new address and contacting the provider if an engineer visit or equipment change is required.
Finish your address updates
Work through the organisations that still have your old address. Common examples include banks, insurers, employers, subscriptions, electoral registration and vehicle records. Requirements differ, so use the organisation’s official service rather than relying on a single generic checklist for every account.
What services might you need when moving?
The most common practical needs around the move usually fall into a small number of categories:
- Removals: moving furniture and belongings between properties.
- Cleaning: preparing the old property for handover or the new home before unpacking.
- Storage: useful when dates do not line up, when downsizing, or during renovation.
- Furniture clearance: removing unwanted furniture or household items that will not move with you.
MyFastOffer4U is currently testing a simpler local-first approach: tell us the service you need, the postcode and the timing, and we use that information to understand which local options are most relevant. We do not invent provider recommendations where a suitable provider has not been verified.

Frequently asked questions
How early should I start preparing to move house?
Starting six to eight weeks before the move gives you more time to compare removal options, declutter, arrange broadband and deal with address changes. Some moves can be organised faster, but availability becomes more important as the date gets closer.
When should I redirect my post?
Royal Mail says it needs at least five working days to arrange a redirection and recommends applying around three weeks before the move where possible.
Do I need to update the DVLA when I move?
Yes, if the relevant records apply to you. GOV.UK states that you must update your driving licence when you move and also update the vehicle log book if you are the registered keeper.
Should I book removals before exchange or completion?
It depends on how firm your moving date is and the provider’s cancellation terms. Ask the removal company how it handles date changes before paying a deposit or committing to a fixed date.
What if I need storage between homes?
Temporary storage can help when completion dates do not line up, when you are downsizing, or when the new property is not ready for all your belongings. Confirm access rules, minimum storage periods, security and total charges before booking.
