Choosing a removal company is not only about finding the lowest price. A good move depends on whether the company can handle your property, your belongings, your route and your completion-day timing without creating new problems.

This guide explains how to compare removal companies in the UK using practical criteria: location, availability, written quotations, insurance or liability protection, reviews, payment terms and what happens if your moving date changes.
If you already know the postcode where you need help, you can also use our Moving Home Services request. We are testing a local-first approach that uses postcode, service type and timing to understand the most relevant options.
Quick answer: how do you choose a removal company?
Start with three or more suitable companies that serve your area, then compare what is included rather than comparing only the headline price. Ask for a written quotation, check what protection applies to your belongings, understand cancellation or date-change terms, review recent customer feedback and confirm exactly what the company will do on moving day.
Removal company checklist
- Does the company serve both your current and destination postcode?
- Is it available around your expected moving date?
- Will it provide a written quotation?
- Does the quote clearly explain what is included and excluded?
- What protection or liability applies if belongings are lost or damaged?
- Are packing, dismantling, storage or waiting time included or extra?
- What happens if the completion date changes?
- How much deposit or advance payment is required?
- Are recent customer reviews available from a credible source?
- Who should you contact if there is a problem on moving day?
1. Start with location and availability
A company can have strong reviews but still be the wrong option if it does not regularly cover your area or cannot work around your moving date. Start by checking the postcode where the collection is needed, the destination and the likely timing.
This is why our Moving Home Services test starts with location before provider names. A user should not have to search a national directory when the immediate question is simply: who can realistically help with this move in this area?

2. Ask for a written quotation
Do not rely only on a phone estimate or a headline price. A useful quotation should make it clear what work is included and what could create additional charges.
Which? Trusted Traders says removal companies it endorses should provide customers with a clear cost breakdown before commitment where possible and explain variable factors where a final cost cannot yet be fixed.
Ask whether the quote includes:
- loading and unloading;
- packing materials or packing service;
- dismantling and reassembling furniture;
- stairs, lifts or difficult access;
- long carries from the property to the vehicle;
- waiting time if keys are delayed;
- storage or redelivery;
- parking or access charges where relevant;
- VAT where applicable.
3. Compare the service, not just the price
Two quotes can look similar while covering very different levels of service. One company may include packing and furniture dismantling, while another may charge separately. One may price waiting time differently if completion is delayed.
Make a simple comparison table for yourself with four columns: company, total quoted cost, included services and possible extras. That makes the trade-offs much easier to see.
4. Check what protection applies to your belongings
Ask the company to explain in writing what happens if an item is lost or damaged. Do not assume that every item is automatically covered for its full value or that self-packed boxes are treated in the same way as professionally packed items.
Which? advises checking the removal company’s insurance position and notes that cover can have limits or conditions. If you have unusually valuable or fragile possessions, explain this before the move and ask what additional steps or cover may be needed.
5. Understand deposits and advance payments
Some removal companies require payment in advance. Before paying, make sure you understand the payment schedule, refund terms and what protection exists if the company cannot perform the move.
The British Association of Removers says its members provide an Advanced Payment Guarantee scheme for qualifying home moves, subject to the scheme’s terms and the member’s level of cover. If a company says it is a BAR member, you can check the membership and ask which protection applies to your specific move.
6. Read reviews carefully
Reviews are useful, but the star rating alone is not enough. Look for recent reviews that describe jobs similar to yours.
Pay attention to recurring comments about:
- arriving when promised;
- communication before moving day;
- care with furniture and property;
- how problems were handled;
- unexpected charges;
- packing quality;
- delays around key collection or access.
A single negative review does not automatically make a company unsuitable. Repeated patterns are more useful than isolated comments.
7. Ask what happens if your moving date changes
Property transactions do not always move on the original timetable. Before committing, ask what happens if your completion date moves by a day or a week.
Check:
- whether the booking can be moved;
- how much notice is required;
- whether a postponement fee applies;
- whether your deposit transfers to the new date;
- what happens if the company is unavailable on the replacement date.
Once exchange has taken place in England and Wales, the completion date is normally much firmer. GOV.UK recommends informing your removal company of the move date between exchange and completion.
8. Tell the company about access problems before moving day
A quotation is only useful if the company understands the job. Tell them about narrow staircases, flats without lifts, restricted parking, long walking distances, heavy furniture and anything else that may change the equipment, staffing or time required.
If possible, ask whether the company wants to carry out a home survey or video survey before confirming the quote.
9. Decide whether you need packing or storage too
A removal company may offer more than transport. If you need packing, storage, furniture clearance or help between two completion dates, compare the whole requirement instead of booking each service without a plan.
Our Moving Home Services request currently lets users indicate removals, cleaning, storage and furniture clearance together so we can learn which service combinations matter most in each area.
10. Keep important items with you
Even when using a professional removal company, keep essential documents, medicines, keys, phones, chargers and other items you may need immediately with you rather than loading everything into the removal vehicle.
For a wider preparation timeline, see our Moving House Checklist UK.
Warning signs to investigate before booking
Pause and ask more questions if:
- the company will not provide a written quotation or clear terms;
- the price is dramatically lower than comparable quotes without an explanation;
- important charges are unclear;
- the company will not explain what happens if your date changes;
- you cannot identify who you are contracting with;
- insurance, liability or claims information is vague;
- payment demands do not match the written agreement.
If a service goes wrong, Citizens Advice explains that consumer services should be carried out with reasonable care and skill and provides guidance on resolving problems and reporting businesses where necessary.
Should you always choose the cheapest removal company?
No. Price matters, but the lowest quote may not represent the lowest overall risk or cost. Compare the full service, timing, protection, terms and evidence of reliability. The most suitable company is the one that best fits the actual move, not simply the one with the smallest headline number.
Frequently asked questions
How many removal quotes should I get?
There is no fixed number required, but comparing several suitable companies makes it easier to understand the normal price range and spot differences in what each quote includes.
Should a removal company visit my home before quoting?
For larger or more complicated moves, a home or video survey can help the company understand the volume of belongings, access and special items. Ask how they assess the job before confirming the quote.
Do removal companies insure your belongings?
Protection varies by company and contract. Ask what cover or liability applies, what limits or exclusions exist, and whether self-packed or high-value items are treated differently.
When should I book a removal company?
Research providers early, especially for busy periods. Before paying a non-refundable amount, understand how firm your moving date is and what the company’s postponement terms are.
What if I need storage as well as removals?
Ask whether the same provider offers storage and how access, duration, insurance and redelivery are charged. You can also select storage alongside removals through our Moving Home Services request.
